Method
Five horses are breathing on each other at the top of the leaderboard today, and when the scores won't separate them, I let the market do the talking. The engine scanned the full Saturday card — 47 races, 494 runners declared — and ran every runner through a four-stage filter pipeline before building composites. The odds band kept runners priced between 2.0 and 50.0 decimal (evens to 49/1; nothing odds-on). Field size cut anything outside 6–14 declared runners — small fields are noisy, big fields are chaos. A final collision check dropped 3 runners that the Lay of the Day was opposing today. Feature weights were: market_move 1.6, speed 1.5, form 1.2, class_change 1.0, trainer_strike 0.8, going 0.8, draw reserved for v2.
Today's universe
The day opened with 494 runners across 47 races. The odds-band filter trimmed that to 433. Field-size constraints brought it to 361. The Lay of the Day collision check removed a further three, leaving 358 runners as the scored universe from which the shortlist was drawn.
The shortlist
Six horses cleared the filters with composites worth discussing. Minella Rockett tops the board on 7.40/10 — a steamer at 7/4 with a speed z-score of +1.82 and a market-move that contributed +1.05 to its composite, though a cold trainer (0/12 over 30 days) and two unavailable features leave gaps in the picture. Amandari sits second on 7.28/10 at 9/4, backed by the hot Gosden yard at 21% over 30 days and a market edge of +20.1%, but no form string on file is a material blind spot. Mighty Fleur scores 7.22/10 at 11/8, with a fully populated feature card — form, speed, going, class — all present and readable; that completeness matters when you're trying to trust a number. Wosta and Ella Beach both sit at 7.21/10 and 7.10/10 respectively, with Wosta carrying the biggest implied-edge figure on the card at +37.3% — flagged separately as today's value interest at 11/4. Axel Bleue rounds out the six on 7.09/10 with a class drop and strong going record. The gap between Minella Rockett and Mighty Fleur is only 0.18 points — well inside the 0.4 threshold the engine treats as a clear lead. When scores are this level, the tiebreak is the shortest price on the shortlist: the horse the market rates likeliest.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Mighty Fleur is that it is the only horse in the top three with a complete feature card — and today that matters more than marginal composite points. The top scorer, Minella Rockett, leads by 0.18/10, which is nothing; the tiebreak rule is explicit. Among the tied cluster, Mighty Fleur at 11/8 is the shortest-priced runner, which is the engine's designated tiebreaker when the scores cannot separate the field. I am not claiming it is the strongest horse on paper — it is not; Minella Rockett has that argument. I am saying the market has made its call and the model cannot override it at this margin.
The feature case is solid without being outstanding. Speed comes in at +1.54 on a z-score basis — SR 125 against a field mean of 105.5 — which is strong for a Class 4 mares' handicap chase. Form reads '72-111', and the decay-weighted average on that run of wins contributes +2.49 to the raw form score, the highest form number in the shortlist. Going is confirmed — 3-from-10 wins on good or adjacent ground, with 9 placed runs from those 10 — which is a proper sample, not a one-run fluke. Class is flat, same rank as last time out, neither a drop nor a rise, so no credit and no penalty there. Trainer Mickey Bowen is on par at 10% over 30 days; nothing to shout about, but not cold either.
The market-move score is +2.00 — a steamer, with a strict majority of bookies shortening and none drifting. At 11/8, the market implied probability sits at 37.6%; the engine's estimate is 36.7%, which is essentially flat — no edge, and I will not pretend otherwise. But in a level-scores scenario, the market consensus is the signal I weight most heavily, and the money coming in here reinforces rather than contradicts the composite.
What worries me
The honest risks are real. Trainer Mickey Bowen's 30-day strike rate of 10% is uninspiring, and the market-edge figure of -12.9% means the model is not finding value relative to the bookmakers' pricing — if anything, the horse may be a shade short. The going is listed as Good at Worcester; Mighty Fleur has its going data populated (3-from-10, good or adjacent), but if the ground softens before the 15:37 off, that sample doesn't strictly apply. The draw feature is unavailable across the entire shortlist — not a factor in a chase, but noted for transparency. And I should be candid: Minella Rockett at 7/4 has a higher composite (7.40) and a stronger speed reading; if you believe the top score should always lead, that is a fair counter-argument to today's selection. Wosta at 11/4 carries the biggest implied-edge figure on the shortlist at +37.3% and is the separately published value interest — worth a look if you are building your own book.
