Method
The nursery market at Naas is talking, and when a two-year-old steams in soft ground while posting the field's highest speed rating, I listen. Today's scan covered all 51 declared races and 686 runners, run through a four-stage filter pipeline: odds band 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), field size 6–14 runners, and a lay-of-day collision check. Feature scoring applies weighted coefficients — market move carries the heaviest load at 1.6, speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, with class change, trainer strike, and going weighted between 0.5 and 1.0. The pipeline trimmed 686 → 491 → 299 → 297 survivors before composite ranking was applied.
Today's universe
The day started with 51 races and 686 runners. Stripping odds-on and 50/1-plus runners cut that to 491. Filtering for field sizes between 6 and 14 brought it to 299. Two runners were then removed because the lay-of-day model is opposing them today, leaving 297 qualified runners going into the score-off.
The shortlist
Five runners separated themselves at the top. Pink Venom leads on 7.40/10, driven by a speed z-score of +2.12 and a market move score of +2.00 — the two highest-weighted features both firing hard. Made U Blush sits second on 7.15/10 and is the most interesting runner-up: a +45.3% model edge over market implied price and a solid going record of 3-from-9 on good to soft. Stick To The Board scores 7.12/10 but carries two UNAVAILABLE features — going and class change — and its edge reading is -24.0%, meaning the market has it shorter than the model likes. Bamako Beach lands on 7.00/10 with a cold trainer in M D O'Callaghan at 7% over 30 days, and no going data on soft. Alfred Wincham shares 7.00/10 and owns the most striking trainer stat on the card — Patrick Neville at 35% over 17 runners — but the model edge of +113.6% at 5/1 invites scepticism rather than certainty. What tipped the balance toward Pink Venom was the convergence of the two heaviest features at their ceiling, a speed figure that clears the field by more than two standard deviations, and the fact the market is also pulling in the same direction.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to on Pink Venom is the speed number. An SR of 106 against a field mean of 89.2 gives a z-score of +2.12 — that is not a marginal edge, that is the fastest horse in the race by a distance the model finds meaningful. Speed is the highest-weighted feature here at 1.5, and it is scoring at the top of its range. That alone would put her on the shortlist. What closes the case is the market move. The market move feature — weighted at 1.6, the heaviest of all — is also scoring +2.00, the maximum reading. A strict majority of bookies have shortened her; none have drifted. That is the market and the model pointing at the same horse, and in a nursery handicap where inside information travels fast, I take the steamer signal seriously. Form reads '73311' — the decay-weighted average on that latest win comes in at +1.33, which contributes a form score of +0.68 to the composite. She arrives in form, not on the back of a lucky one-off.
What worries me
Honesty first: the market edge is fractionally negative at -10.9%, meaning the model's estimated win probability of 37.5% barely edges out the market implied 37.6%. This is not a horse the model thinks the market has badly wrong — the signal here is convergence, not value in the traditional sense. The going is a live concern: Pink Venom has run once on soft or adjacent ground and was unplaced. Class change is UNAVAILABLE — the race class is unrecognised, so I cannot tell you whether she is dropping or rising. Trainer J. P. Murtagh is running at 9% over 91 runners in the last 30 days, which scores -0.27 — below par, not alarming, but not a hot hand. Draw data is unavailable across the board. At 11/8 she is essentially the favourite, and a short-priced nursery handicap steamer beaten on soft ground is a familiar type of loser. The conviction band is MEDIUM and I am not stretching it.
