Method
The market does not lie without reason, and today it is shouting loudest about a filly at Wolverhampton. The scan covered all declared runners for 18 August 2026, applying a strict filter pipeline: odds band 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on runners, nothing wilder than 49/1), field size 6–14 runners to cut out the noise of small-field certainties and big-field lottery draws, and a lay-of-day collision screen that removed two runners the system is actively opposing. Feature weights were applied across speed (1.5), market move (1.6), form (1.2), class change (1.0), trainer strike rate and going (both 0.8), and draw — which remains unavailable pending the v2 build.
Today's universe
The day opened with 27 races and 275 runners. The race-state screen kept all 275 (no abandonments, no already-resulted races). The odds filter trimmed that to 235, the field-size screen to 180, and the lay-of-day collision check dropped two more, leaving 178 runners in contention. From that pool the engine ranked composites and surfaced a shortlist of six.
The shortlist
The read I keep coming back to is how cleanly Samra Star separated herself from the rest. Her composite of 7.02/10 is the only score in the shortlist I would call genuinely strong — everything below it is solid-to-marginal territory. Foinix came in second at 6.62/10, driven by speed and a market move, but a trainer strike rate of just 6% over the last 30 days is a real drag, and her going record of 1-from-11 on good or adjacent ground is difficult to overlook. Spaceman at 6.60/10 and Kakirra at 6.59/10 are separated by a rounding error, but Spaceman's market edge is actually negative (-7.4%) and the Fahey stable is cold; Kakirra has no market move at all. Arnaz at 6.52/10 is a steamer on good-to-firm ground but her form contribution is thin and her edge is negative. Impulsive Spirit at 6.45/10 is a market shock at 16/1, but form, class change, and going are all unavailable — too many blanks to act on. What tipped the balance for Samra Star was the combination of the highest market-move contribution, a form score built on genuine recent wins, and a hot trainer. No other shortlist entry stacks all three.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Samra Star is the market move. At the heaviest-weighted feature in this model (1.6), a strict-majority steamer scoring +2.00 is the maximum signal the engine records — and it is sitting alongside a model-implied win probability of 35.7% against a market-implied 22.3%, an edge of +42.8%. When the money moves that hard into a price that is already underestimating a runner by that margin, something is known. Her form score of +0.59 (composite driver) is underpinned by a recent string of '438211' — the latest win decays to a weighted average of +1.36 on the raw form feature. That is a horse who has been climbing through her form and has arrived at a peak. Speed adds +0.45 to the composite: an SR of 74 against a field mean of 58.8 (z = +1.23) is a meaningful edge at this class level. The class-change flag is a mild negative — she is rising one rank today, from a last-time-out class rank of 7 to 6 — but Linda Perratt's 30-day strike rate of 22% from 32 runners is a hot bench mark, and a trainer firing at that clip tends to place horses in races they can win, not races that stretch them beyond their ceiling. Going is positive too: 2-from-4 with three placed runs on good or adjacent ground.
What worries me
The honest risks here are real, even if the composite is the strongest on the board today. Rising in class is the sharpest one — the class-change score of -0.60 is the only feature pulling in the wrong direction, and handicap fillies' races at Wolverhampton can expose a horse that has been winning in softer company. Draw data is unavailable across the whole shortlist, and Wolverhampton's Polytrack has known bias profiles that the model simply cannot account for yet. The composite sits at 7.02/10, which I would call strong but not emphatic — it is not an 8+ reading. The engine conviction is logged as MEDIUM, and that is the right label: the case is solid, the market supports it, but this is not a nailed-on certainty and the field-size constraints mean the opposition is compressed and competitive.
