Calandagan's Price Won't Last, Back Him Now

The French raider is steaming into favouritism for good reason — the form book backs every yard of it.

Calandagan arrives at Ascot as the most compelling favourite this race has seen in years, and the market has already worked it out. Steaming in to 15/8 off a form string that reads 1-1412, the Graffard-trained five-year-old has been operating at the very top of the tree all season. Those last three SPs — 5/4F, 1/3F, 6/5F — tell you everything about how the betting intelligence views this horse: he goes off favourite every time he runs, and for the most part he delivers. The '2' on the end of the form string is not a collapse; it is a beaten-favourite run at the summit of the sport, and this distance-and-going combination (D:+ GF:+) is exactly the canvas he paints on best. The deterministic model ranks him first with a score of 7.17, carrying the two strongest positive drivers in the field: market move (+0.9) and form (+0.7). That is not a coincidence. That is the model reading what the bookmakers are already reading.

The second most likely winner here is Ombudsman, trained by the Gosdens and ridden by William Buick, who at 25% is the highest-strike-rate jockey in this field. Ombudsman's form — 2-1114 — shouts quality, and three consecutive wins at the very sharp end of the market (2/5F, 11/10F, 5/6F) are not flukes. But his last run was a '4', and at 7/4 the market has him slightly shorter than the evidence warrants when Calandagan is moving in the opposite direction. Calandagan wins this race.

The Shape of the Race

Bay City Roller is the only confirmed front-runner in the field, and with four runners whose pace-style is uncertain, Oisin Murphy is likely to bounce him out and control the fractions from the front. That is a relatively compressed tempo for a Group 1, meaning Bay City Roller could dictate a comfortable gallop and get first run entering the straight. Hold-up specialist Ombudsman will need that gallop to genuinely hot up in the final three furlongs, which may or may not happen. Calandagan, with no declared style, almost certainly tracks the pace from a prominent position — the setup suits him over a true galloper.

The Storylines

  • Market steamers rarely lie at Group 1 Calandagan is the only horse shortening today; in six-runner Group 1 fields, market steamers at this level convert at a substantially higher rate than drifters.
  • Buick aboard Gosden's hold-up horse William Buick's 25% career strike rate is the highest in this field, but he needs Bay City Roller to set a genuine pace to deliver Ombudsman late.
  • Constitution River's youth versus class The three-year-old carries 9-3 against seasoned five-year-olds; Ryan Moore's 24% strike rate makes her the each-way lottery ticket if the weight allowance bites.

How it Finishes

LLaMa’s predicted 1-2-3-4 — with the actual result tagged on.

Predicted 1st

Calandagan

15/8 now 9/4 SR 137 4★ AI

Highest model score (7.17), strongest market move in the field, D:+ GF:+, and three consecutive starts as a sub-evens favourite at Group 1 level make this a clear call.

Placed — finished 2nd
Predicted 2nd

Ombudsman

7/4 now 13/8 SR 143 4★ AI

Three wins on the bounce at market-leader prices justify the 7/4; last run '4' is the only brake on confidence, and Buick gives him every chance from off the pace.

Placed — finished 1st
Predicted 3rd

Constitution River

6/1 now 9/2 SR 131 3★ AI

The weight allowance and Ryan Moore's 24% strike rate make her the live each-way play; three-year-olds with D:+ GF:+ and -11133 form are not to be dismissed lightly.

Missed — finished 5th
Predicted 4th

Bay City Roller

6/1 now 7/1 SR 128 3★ AI

Front-runner control gives him a squeak if the pace is sedate, but a +5lb weight swing and a drifting market (6/1 Δdrifter) say the field knows something the optimists don't.

Placed — finished 3rd
The Verdict · High conviction

This is a win bet on Calandagan at 15/8, two units. The confidence band is medium rather than high only because Ombudsman is a genuine Group 1 horse with the best jockey in the race and a scenario — a slow gallop that fails to stretch the field — that could see him pounce late. But Calandagan's market trajectory, his course-and-distance suitability, and the model's clear-cut scoring make him the right side of the two most traded prices in this race. Mr Fox has not left a note in the notebook for this one, so the call is mine alone — and I'm comfortable with it.
