Method
Five horses dead-level on the scoreboard, and on a day like this the market becomes the tiebreaker — that is the read I keep coming back to on 15 October. Today's scan covered 40 races and 437 declared runners across the card. The filter pipeline ran in four stages: first, a race-state pass (no change, 437 → 437); then an odds-band cut keeping only runners priced between 2.0 and 50.0 decimal — evens to 49/1, nothing odds-on (437 → 377); then a field-size trim retaining races with 6–14 declared runners (377 → 248); and finally a lay-of-day collision drop that removed two runners flagged by the lay system (248 → 246). Feature weights used throughout: market_move 1.6, speed 1.5, form 1.2, class_change 1.0, trainer_strike and going both 0.8, draw 0.5 (unavailable, reserved for v2).
Today's universe
The day opened with 40 races and 437 runners. After running the full pipeline — odds band, field size, and lay-of-day collision filters — 246 runners survived to be scored. Those 246 runners were ranked by composite score, and the top six were carried forward to the shortlist.
The shortlist
Six horses made the shortlist. Roi du Risk leads on composite at 7.16/10, driven by a clean steamer in the market and a speed rating of SR 125 against a field mean of 111.7. Return of The Gods sits second at 6.99/10 — its going record (2-from-5, 4 placed) and a model-implied edge of +54.1% over market price are the standout features. Quiet Soul comes in third at 6.84/10, with a two-class drop, a hot trainer at 20% strike rate, and a raw model edge of +230.9% — noted here as the value pick and published separately, it is not today's selection. Midnight's Dream scores 6.83/10, Valadero at 6.53/10, and Katios Queen at 6.53/10 complete the six. The top composite — Roi du Risk — leads the selection by only 0.17 points, well under the 0.4 gap that registers as a clear lead. When the scores cannot separate the field, the engine defaults to the shortest-priced horse on the shortlist: the one the market has already decided is likeliest.
Why this horse
I want to be straight with the reader: Midnight's Dream is not the top composite today. Roi du Risk holds that position at 7.16/10. But the margin between first and fourth is 0.33 points — marginal, not decisive — and when the scores sit this close, the method says hand the decision to the market. At 11/8 (decimal 2.375), Midnight's Dream is the shortest price on the shortlist, and that carries information in itself. The speed figure is the sharpest on the shortlist in its class bracket: SR 70 against a field mean of 41.6, a z-score of +1.90, and a weighted speed contribution of +1.91 — that is a horse running meaningfully faster than its rivals have managed. The form line '235351' ends with a win, and the decay-weighted form score of +1.27 is solid. The market_move contribution is +2.00 — a confirmed steamer with a strict majority of bookies shortening, none drifting. That is the highest possible market signal the engine records. The one number that gives me pause is the market-edge read: at 11/8, the model's estimated win probability of 34.8% is actually below the market-implied 37.6%, a negative edge of -17.4%. On any other day I would flag that harder. Today it is the price of using the shortest-priced horse as the tiebreaker — the market already agrees this horse should be favourite, and the model is not far behind. The conviction band reflects that: MEDIUM. The trainer, Joseph Parr, is on par at 9% strike rate (2/20) over the last 30 days — no tailwind there, but no red flag either. The going score is modest, +0.25, from 1-from-8 with 4 placed on good or adjacent ground — not a concern on a standard good surface, but not a positive either.
What worries me
The negative model edge on Midnight's Dream is the honest risk to name first: the market has this horse at 37.6% implied, the model at 34.8% — a gap of -17.4%. It is not large, but it means the engine is following the market rather than leading it today. The going score is thin at +0.25 (1-from-8 on good ground), so any overnight rain pushing the surface softer is worth checking before placing. Trainer Parr's 9% strike rate over 30 days offers no support. Roi du Risk at 7.16/10 composite remains the statistically stronger horse by the numbers — if you are uncomfortable with the tiebreaker logic, that is the name to note. Class_change, going, and draw are all either unavailable or flat for Midnight's Dream, which means the entire case rests on speed, form, and market signal. If any of those three reads is wrong, there is little else to fall back on.
