The market shouted — Lady Bam answered loudest

Method

On a day when three Newmarket steamers were competing for the same crown, the read I keep coming back to is that price and edge are not the same thing — and Lady Bam at 11/1 holds an edge that none of the classier alternatives can match. Today's scan ran across 47 declared races and 562 runners, applying a strict filter pipeline before any composite scoring began. The odds band removed anything priced odds-on or above 49/1 in decimal terms (2.0–50.0 decimal), trimming the field to 492. The field-size filter — keeping only races with 6–14 declared runners — cut that to 244. One runner was dropped by the lay-of-day collision check, leaving 243 runners eligible for composite scoring. Feature weights were applied as follows: market_move at 1.6 (the heaviest), speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change and going at 1.0 and 0.8 respectively, trainer_strike at 0.8, and draw at 0.5 — though draw data is unavailable in this version of the engine and is reserved for v2.

Today's universe

The day opened with 47 races and 562 runners. The race-state check passed all 562 through — no abandoned cards or already-resulted races to clean up. The odds band (2.0–50.0 decimal) removed 70 runners, bringing the pool to 492. The field-size gate (6–14 runners) was the sharpest cut, dropping the pool to 244. One further runner was removed by the lay-of-day collision check, leaving a final eligible universe of 243 runners from which the composite scores were built.

The shortlist

Five horses separated themselves at the top of the composite table. Lady Bam led on 7.31/10, driven primarily by a market_move score of +2.00 (a strict steamer — the majority of books shortened, none drifted), speed at +1.24 (SR 152 against a field mean of 133.7), and form at +1.23. Archers Bay sat second on 7.11/10 with strong speed (SR 110, z = +1.82) and a genuine class-drop signal, but a cold trainer in Marco Botti dragged the composite back. Forty Years On scored 7.10/10 — the form string is the best on the shortlist and the speed figure is formidable — but at 13/8 decimal 2.625, the market-implied probability (34.0%) almost entirely consumed the engine's estimated win probability (36.1%), leaving a negligible edge of just -5.3%. Forbidden Fire came in at 7.01/10 with a perfect 2-from-2 going record and the highest form sub-score, but an SR of 108 in a Group 1 field where the mean sits at 98.2 is a thinner speed edge than it first appears. Beaujon and Sydney Grace rounded out the six, both solid steamers but carrying too many unavailable feature slots to close the gap. What tipped the balance towards Lady Bam was the combination of the highest composite, the sharpest market edge (+345.1% over implied), and the heaviest-weighted feature — market_move — firing at its maximum reading.

Why this horse

The read I keep coming back to is the gap between what the market says and what the engine sees. Lady Bam is available at 11/1 — that is a market-implied win probability of 7.4%. The engine's estimated win probability sits at 37.1%. That is an edge of +345.1%, and it is not a rounding error — it is the largest edge gap on today's entire eligible card by a considerable distance. The next-closest is Forbidden Fire at +220.8%, and she is running in a Group 1 where the competition depth alone should compress any edge. For Lady Bam, the edge exists in a Class 4 novice hurdle at Chepstow, which is exactly the kind of race where a well-backed, form-holding horse can be mispriced by a thin book. The market_move signal here is the maximum the engine produces — +2.00 at a weight of 1.6 — meaning the bookmakers moved in her direction as a strict majority, and none drifted. That is not noise. The speed figure is the single strongest on the entire shortlist in z-score terms relative to its own field: an SR of 152 against a field mean of 133.7 (z = +1.24). In a novice hurdle, that kind of raw speed superiority matters more, not less, than it would in a deep handicap. Trainer Tom Ellis is running hot — 3 from 15 in the last 30 days, a 20% strike rate — and the form string of '613-' carries a decay-weighted average of +0.82 on the form feature. That is a horse who won last time out with recency on its side. The composite lands at 7.31/10, which I read as a strong signal — the threshold I use for conviction is 7+, and this is the only runner today that clears it with meaningful separation from the rest.

What worries me

Two features are unavailable for Lady Bam and both matter: class_change carries no data because she has no prior runs with a recognised class to compare, and the going feature returns nothing — she has no recorded career runs on good to soft or adjacent ground. That second gap is the one I take seriously. Chepstow in October on good to soft is not unusual going, but if she has any physical preference for faster ground that is simply not visible in this data set. The class_change gap is less troubling in a novice context where many entrants are in the same position, but it does mean the engine cannot confirm she is dropping into a more favourable grade. At 11/1, a single-unit stake is proportionate — the edge is there, but the going unknown introduces a real-world variable the composite cannot price. Archers Bay also warrants a mention: the Newmarket race is a Heritage Handicap with sharper-than-usual competition, and if the money in that race is right, it could make Lady Bam's price look even better by comparison — but it could equally signal that the sharp money is splitting across the card today rather than pointing cleanly in one direction.
