Charlie Appleby fires in the steamer — Dawn Chorus leads the book

Method

When a Charlie Appleby debutante shortens across the board at a Class 3 fillies' novice and the model spits out a market-move score of +2.00 — its ceiling — you stop arguing and start listening. Today's scan covered every declared runner on the card, running through a four-stage filter pipeline: first a race-state check, then an odds band of 2.0 – 50.0 decimal (nothing odds-on, nothing longer than 49/1), then a field-size gate of 6 – 14 runners to strip out manic big-field chaos and thin small-field noise, and finally a lay-of-day collision screen that pulled two further runners. Feature weights running underneath that pipeline put market movement heaviest at 1.6, speed second at 1.5, and form third at 1.2 — so today's model was always going to reward a horse that steamed and showed a speed edge. Dawn Chorus ticked both boxes harder than anything else on the sheet.

Today's universe

The day opened with 55 races and 554 runners. The odds band trimmed that to 490; the field-size gate brought it to 423; the lay-of-day collision screen dropped a further two, leaving 421 runners eligible for scoring. From those 421, the engine produced a shortlist of six worth a second look.

The shortlist

The top six by composite were Dawn Chorus (7.52/10), Sax Avoidance (6.97/10), Emerald Time (6.78/10), Hauteluce (6.70/10), Manton Bay (6.67/10), and Sparksmith (6.52/10). The gap between first and second — 0.55 points — is not enormous, but it is clean. What tipped Dawn Chorus clear was the combination of a maxed-out market-move score and a trainer firing at 35% over the last 30 days; no other horse on the shortlist brought both of those together. Hauteluce was the only one with a higher raw speed z-score (+1.75), but it sits at decimal 2.1 — odds-on territory in feel if not in filter rules — and the model's own market read shows a negative edge of -28.3%, meaning the market already over-values it relative to the engine's probability. That alone keeps it off the bet.

Why this horse

The read I keep coming back to on Dawn Chorus is this: the market-move score is +2.00 — the model's hard ceiling — meaning a strict majority of bookmakers shortened overnight and not one drifted. That is not a routine morning move; that is coordinated confidence landing from somewhere. Under a feature weight of 1.6, that single driver contributed +1.37 to the composite on its own. At 4/1, the engine's estimated win probability sits at 38.1% against a market-implied 17.9% — a raw edge of +90.5%. I am not claiming the model is a crystal ball, but an edge that wide, on a horse that is shortening not drifting, is signal I take seriously. The speed figure backs the market: an SR of 152 against a field mean of 141.9 gives a z-score of +0.77, scoring +0.50 after weighting. That is a genuine pace advantage over this field, not a rounding error. And then there is Charlie Appleby running at 35% over the last 30 days — 20 wins from 57 runners — which is a hot yard by any measure and contributed +0.66 to the composite via the trainer-strike feature. Three drivers all pointing the same direction: I am comfortable with that picture. The caveats on missing data are real — form string unavailable, class-change unavailable, going unavailable, draw feature not yet built — but the three features that are populated are all strong, and the one with the highest weight in the model is as strong as it gets.

What worries me

The missing data is the honest risk here and I will not paper over it. Form is unavailable — this may be a debut or a lightly-raced filly with no string on file, meaning I cannot verify whether recent runs support the pace figure. Going is also unavailable, so I have no read on how she handles good to firm; if the ground does not suit, that SR of 152 is academic. Class-change data is absent too, so there is no model view on whether a step up or down in class is a tailwind or a headwind today. Sax Avoidance at 6.97/10 is the closest pursuer and brings a more complete feature profile — form string of '54311' scoring +1.99, going confirmed at 1-from-1 on good to soft, and the same maxed market-move score — so if Dawn Chorus disappoints in the stalls or the paddock, that is the horse I would have wanted instead. Finally, Yarmouth in October on good to firm can play fast and unforgiving; if the going description shifts before the off, revisit.
