Method
Arab racing at Bath is a niche corner of the card, but when the money moves this hard, you don't look away. Today I ran the full filter pipeline across 39 races and 385 runners declared for Saturday, stripping the field back with three sequential cuts: an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on runners — I don't chase chalk), a field-size gate of 6–14 runners (small fields are noisy, big fields are chaos, the research log's words and mine), and a lay-of-day collision check that cleared out a further 3 runners linked to 6 flagged horse IDs. The engine weights market_move heaviest at 1.6, then speed at 1.5, form at 1.2 — in that order. Today that weighting matters a great deal.
Today's universe
Starting from 385 runners, the odds band cut brought us to 334. The field-size filter trimmed that to 275. The lay-of-day collision step removed a final 3, leaving 272 runners in contention across qualifying races. Those 272 fed into composite scoring. The shortlist you're reading is the top six from that surviving pool.
The shortlist
The top six separated into two tiers fairly quickly. Jeewan at 7.17/10 leads, with Methgal close behind at 7.06/10 — the gap is only 0.11 points, which I'll address honestly. Belle of Kt posts 6.90/10 on the back of a standout market-edge figure and a class drop, but sits at 8/1 and the edge calc is doing heavy lifting there. Soft Landing at 6.74/10 carries a cold trainer and no form string — too many unknowns. Manton Bay at 6.65/10 runs in Listed company with a trainer on 6% — that's a headwind. The Thames Boatman at 6.64/10 is marginal form and cold trainer, dropped from discussion. The feature that ultimately tipped the balance at the top was market_move — both Jeewan and Methgal scored the maximum +2.00 on that driver, so I went to the secondary drivers: Jeewan's trainer is hot at 22% over 30 days; Methgal's trainer is on par at 10%. That broke the tie.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Jeewan is the convergence of a max market-move score and a genuinely hot trainer. The market_move score is +2.00 — a strict majority of bookmakers shortened, none drifted. That is the engine's ceiling, and the engine weights this feature more heavily than any other at 1.6. It is not background noise; it is the loudest signal in today's card. The speed figure backs it: an SR of 151 against a field mean of 145.3, giving a z-score of +1.04 and a weighted speed contribution of +0.51. That is a solid lead, not a marginal one. Form reads '1-5532' — the recent finish sequences show a latest win with a decay-weighted average of +0.66, contributing +0.39 to the composite. Not the most electric form string in the shortlist, but the directional trend is right. Barry Brennan's 30-day strike rate of 22% from 2 wins in 9 runners is flagged as hot by the engine, and that +0.85 trainer contribution is the clearest trainer signal in the entire shortlist — every other trainer in the top six is either on par or cold. The composite lands at 7.17/10, which I'd call a solid score rather than a blowout, but across today's qualifying pool it is the top mark. The market implied win probability is 32.5%; the engine's estimate is 36.4%, a positive edge of +0.1% — slim, but positive. At 7/4, the price isn't generous, but the weight of signal here is consistent rather than reliant on one flashy feature.
What worries me
The honest risks start with what I cannot see. Class is listed as unrecognised for this race — it is an Arab race, a specialist category — so the class_change feature is UNAVAILABLE and I have no read on whether this is a step up or down in grade. Going is equally blind: no career runs on good or adjacent going on file, which means the engine has no evidence that Jeewan handles today's surface. That is a meaningful gap. The composite sits only 0.11 points ahead of Methgal, who has stronger raw speed figures (SR 78 vs a field mean of 50.1, z = +1.79) and a better form string ('721221'), but is priced at evens — inside the odds band at decimal 2.0 but only just, and the market-implied probability of 44.6% against an engine estimate of 35.9% gives a negative edge of -28.2%. Methgal's trainer is cold at 10% and the engine dislikes that, but the gap between these two is thin enough that I am flagging it plainly. If you are uncomfortable with the Arab race context and the going unknown, that discomfort is reasonable.
