Method
A compressed field and a steaming market at the Curragh on a Sunday-feeling Saturday — that is the story today, and one horse sits at the intersection of both. The engine scanned all 23 races and 244 runners declared this morning. From there, four sequential filters pruned the universe: odds-on shots and anything priced above 50.0 decimal were cut first (244 → 198, keeping only the 2.0–50.0 decimal band, no odds-on); then field size was enforced, removing races outside the 6–14 runner range (198 → 121, on the basis that small fields are noisy and big fields are chaos); finally, two runners whose horse IDs collided with today's Lay of the Day were dropped (121 → 119). Everything scored from that 119 used a seven-feature composite weighted as follows — market_move at 1.6, speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change and going at 1.0 and 0.8 respectively, trainer_strike at 0.8, and draw at 0.5 (the draw layer is reserved for v2 and returned unavailable for every runner today).
Today's universe
The day opened with 23 races and 244 declared runners. After the odds-band filter removed odds-on shots and 50/1-plus prices, 198 remained. Field-size enforcement — keeping only 6-to-14 runner races — brought that to 121. Two Lay of the Day collisions trimmed the final eligible universe to 119 runners, spread across flat and NH cards at Curragh, Epsom, and Ffos Las among others.
The shortlist
Five horses cleared 6.40/10 on the composite and made the shortlist proper. Curracloe led at 7.57/10 — a clear gap over second-placed Naval Cop at 6.83/10 and Swiped at 6.79/10. Macarone came in at 6.78/10 and Exchange Student at 6.57/10, with Capability Brown just behind at 6.44/10. What separated Curracloe from the pack was the combination of a highest-in-field form score — +1.18 weighted contribution — and a market_move score of +2.00 (a strict majority of bookmakers shortened, none drifted), all underpinned by the strongest speed rating in the shortlist relative to field context. No other runner matched that three-way alignment at the top of the weighted table.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Curracloe is simple: this is a horse whose form string opens with '1' and whose speed figure of SR 100 sits against a field mean of 82.8 — a z-score of +0.96, the kind of number that tells you she is operating at a materially different ceiling to most of what she faces in the Darley Fillies Stakes at the Curragh this afternoon. That speed advantage, at a weight of 1.5, is already doing significant work in the composite.
The market_move signal is the part that sharpens my conviction. The engine grades this as a full +2.00 steamer — a strict majority of bookmakers shortened overnight and none drifted. At a feature weight of 1.6, that is the single heaviest input in the model, and it is firing at maximum. When a horse priced at 11/10 — already in the narrow window just above evens — attracts uniform shortening across the boards, that is not noise. That is money with a view.
Her form contribution is +1.18 weighted, driven by a decay-adjusted average of +2.00 off the latest win. The composite of 7.57/10 is the only score in today's field I would call strong — everything else in the shortlist sits in the solid-to-marginal band. I had a long look at Naval Cop given the +108.7% model edge and a clean class-drop, but at Class 5 on soft at Ffos Las, the ceiling is a different conversation entirely.
What worries me
The risks here are real and worth naming plainly. First, the negative market edge: the engine's estimated win probability is 38.3% against the market's implied 42.5% — that is a -19.5% edge, meaning the market thinks she wins more often than the model does. Backing into a negative model edge requires you to trust the steamer signal and the raw form data over the composite's edge calculation, which is a conscious decision, not an oversight. Second, trainer J. P. Murtagh's 30-day strike rate is 6% from 80 runners — the model flags this as cold, contributing -0.48 to the composite. Third, going and class_change data are both unavailable for Curracloe — no career runs on good or adjacent going are recorded, and no prior class comparison can be made. That is two features returning no signal where signal would help. At 11/10 decimal, there is no each-way cushion. If the going has shifted or the step into Group 3 company exposes her, the price offers no recovery.
