The market said it first — Timely Salute at 5/2

Method

When the money moves before the stories do, I pay attention — and today the signal on Timely Salute was as clean as anything I have seen in weeks. The scan covered Saturday's card through a four-stage filter pipeline: odds band locked to 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), field size trimmed to 6–14 runners, and one runner removed via lay-of-day collision. Feature weights heavily prioritise market movement at 1.6, speed at 1.5, and form at 1.2, with class change, trainer strike, and going weighted progressively lower, and draw currently unbuilt and reserved for v2.

Today's universe

The day opened with 54 races and 628 runners declared. The odds-band filter cut that to 511, the field-size gate brought it down to 371, and the lay-of-day collision check dropped one further runner to leave 370 eligible runners going into the scoring stage.

The shortlist

The top of the board was clear enough at the summit, with a small gap to the chase pack. Timely Salute led on 7.50/10, with Kashooda second at 7.12/10. Massimo Blue sat third on 6.93/10, Inner City Blues fourth on 6.90/10, Ruby Sands fifth on 6.85/10, and Oro Blanco sixth on 6.81/10. The feature that separated the top two was straightforward: Timely Salute posted a cleaner market move score alongside stronger speed and form contributions, while Kashooda had a bigger raw market edge percentage but was let down by a flat class-change score and a going feature that returned unavailable — two holes that kept it off the top step.

Why this horse

The read I keep coming back to is the market-move score: +2.00 on a feature weighted at 1.6 — that is a strict majority of bookmakers shortening, none drifting, which is as unambiguous a steamers signal as the model can produce. The market implied win probability sits at 25.5%, while the engine's estimate is 38.0% — an edge of +33.0%. At 5/2 decimal 3.5, that gap is not trivial and it did not arrive quietly.

Underneath the market signal, the fundamentals hold up. The speed figure is the strongest in a Class 5 field: an SR of 104 against a field mean of 72.1, a z-score of +1.69, weighted to a contribution of +0.61. That kind of separation in a Class 5 handicap hurdle is meaningful — this horse is not just better on paper, it is measurably faster by a wide margin. Form contributes another +0.61, built on a recent string coded '12', with the latest win carrying a decay-weighted average of +1.41. Trainer Max Comley is operating at 25% strike rate over the last 30 days — 3 from 12 — which the model classifies as hot and scores at +1.08. The class drop adds a further +0.90, coming down one rank from its last outing. The going score is modest at +0.40 — one win from four on good or adjacent ground with two placed efforts — so it is not a going horse in the strict sense, but there is no flag against it either.

Put it together: a 7.50/10 composite, strong on every feature that carries the heaviest weight, with a market that has already been moving in the same direction as the model. That alignment is what earns the selection, not any one piece in isolation.

What worries me

The going score is the quietest concern — 1-from-4 on good or adjacent ground is not alarming, but two placed efforts from four runs is a thinner platform than I would like, and the going feature score of +0.40 is the weakest contributor in the breakdown. Draw data is unavailable across the whole shortlist, so I cannot assess positional bias at Market Rasen today — that is a standing caveat until v2 delivers it. Kashooda is the runner-up breathing closest at 7.12/10, and its market edge of +56.8% is actually larger in raw percentage terms — if I am wrong about Timely Salute, it is the horse that makes me look hardest at the screen. The engine conviction is rated MEDIUM by the system, not high — the composite is solid rather than exceptional, and the odds are short enough at 5/2 that there is limited margin for error if conditions or pace do not fall right.
