Sly Man’s Bet of the Day
One horse. One bet. Every day. Sly Man’s read on the day’s card — the shortlist, the price, and the case for the pick.

Method
When every steamer on the shortlist points the same direction, you stop waiting for permission and start asking which one has the hardest evidence underneath the money. That is the read I kept coming back to this morning. The engine scanned 44 races and 529 runners declared for 25 September 2026, applying a strict filter sequence: odds band 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), field size 6–14 runners only, and a final collision check against the Lay of the Day list. Feature weights favour market movement above everything else (1.6), then speed (1.5), then form (1.2), class change (1.0), trainer strike rate and going (both 0.8), with draw reserved for v2.
Today's universe
The pipeline opened with 529 runners. The odds filter cut that to 456 — removing odds-on runners and anything drifting beyond the 50.0 decimal ceiling. The field-size gate took 456 → 229, stripping out small noisy fields below six and the chaos of fields above fourteen. The Lay of the Day collision check removed one further runner, leaving 228 qualified runners going into scoring. That is the pool the shortlist came from.
The shortlist
Five horses separated themselves clearly from the field. Sizzling Affair topped the board at 7.63/10 — the only composite above 7.5, and meaningfully clear of the pack. Speed of Sound came second at 6.83/10, driven by strong recent form ('32131') and a clean market move, though the step up to Group 2 class represents a headwind. Coedana scored 6.72/10 in the Princess Royal, holding class level and steaming in the market, but her trainer's 11% 30-day strike rate offered no extra lift. The Lost King posted 6.69/10 — solid form string and another steamer, but the speed rating sits only z = +0.63 above field mean in a Group 2, and four horses bunched within 0.14 of each other below Sizzling Affair tells you the top of this list is genuinely contested. What tipped the balance for the selection was the combination of the highest market-move contribution in the shortlist alongside the strongest raw speed figure — two of the three highest-weighted features pointing emphatically in the same direction.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to on Sizzling Affair is that the two features that matter most in this engine are not marginal — they are loud. Market move scores +2.00 on a 1.6 weight, meaning a strict majority of bookmakers shortened overnight with none drifting. That is the cleanest steamer signal available in the data. Alongside it, the speed figure is the strongest in the entire shortlist: an SR of 157 against a field mean of 138.9, producing a z-score of +1.70 on a 1.5 weight. When the two top-weighted features both fire at full strength, the composite carries real conviction — 7.63/10 is a strong score by this engine's scale. The market-implied win probability is 32.5%; the engine estimates 38.6%, an edge of +6.2 percentage points. At 7/4 decimal 2.75 that edge has value. K. R. Burke's trainer strike rate of 18% from 138 runners over the last 30 days is tagged as hot, adding a further modest +0.17 to the composite. This is a fillies' novice on soft at Haydock over six furlongs and change — conditions that suit a speed-forward horse being heavily supported.
What worries me
I will not pretend this is a clean card. Three features return UNAVAILABLE for Sizzling Affair: form (no form string on file), class change (no prior recognised-class comparison), and going (no career runs on soft or adjacent). For a novice stakes runner that is not unusual, but it means the composite is built on fewer pillars than I would like. The absence of soft-ground form history is the one that sits with me — today's going is soft at Haydock, and we have no evidence she handles it. Speed of Sound at 6.83/10 is only 0.80 composite points behind and offers a documented form string in a different race; if you want form certainty over market signal, that is your alternative. The odds of 7/4 also leave no margin for error — this is a favourite-territory bet, and novice races carry inherent unpredictability however strong the pre-race picture looks.
