Method
The form book alone doesn't always tell you where the money is going — but today it does, and it's pointing in the same direction as the engine. The scan covered all declared runners on the card for 2026-08-27, applying a filter pipeline across the full 377-runner universe. Odds-on shots were cut first (decimal below 2.0), anything priced above 50.0 went with them, leaving 327 runners. Field size then trimmed the set to races between 6 and 14 declared runners, on the basis that smaller fields are noisy and larger ones are chaos — that brought us to 259 runners. The Lay of the Day collision check dropped zero additional runners from this shortlist. Feature weights used in scoring: market_move at 1.6 (the heaviest), speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change at 1.0, trainer_strike and going both at 0.8, draw reserved for v2 and unavailable across all runners today.
Today's universe
The day opened with 41 races declared and 377 runners. The odds-band filter reduced that to 327, and the field-size gate brought it down to 259 runners that entered scoring. No runners were removed at the Lay of the Day stage. From those 259, the engine ranked all horses by weighted composite and surfaced six names worth a close look.
The shortlist
The top of the board is tight. Gore Point scored 7.26/10, El Morjan came in at 7.25/10, Minaun View and My Girl Katie both hit 7.23/10, then Magical Life at 6.78/10 and Annandale at 6.74/10. The margins at the top are genuinely slim — one hundredth of a point separates first and second. What tipped the balance for Gore Point over El Morjan was the presence of a full feature set: El Morjan has no form string on file, no class comparison available, and no going data at all, which means three features contributed nothing to its composite. Gore Point's score was built on real evidence across every available feature. Minaun View carries the highest edge figure on market implied probability at +120.2%, but the race is in Ireland at 5/1, the class is unrecognised, and the trainer's 30-day strike rate is dragging slightly. My Girl Katie is a warm price at 6/4 with a negative edge of -8.2% — the market has already found it.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to with Gore Point is that everything is firing at once, which is rare at this time of year when form books go patchy. The speed score is +0.98 — an SR of 125 against a field mean of 114.2, comfortably the standout on raw ability in a Class 2 handicap chase at Newton Abbot. That matters. Class 2 over the jumps in late August is a genuine test, and holding a z-score close to +1.0 in that company is not nothing. The form string '-21111' is as clean as it gets: the decay-weighted form score comes in at +2.87 with the latest win carrying an average of +1.91, and rising in class (today rank 3 vs last-time-out rank 4) hasn't stopped it. That class-change feature actually reads as a mild negative at -0.60, which I think is honest — this is a harder race on paper — but the form trajectory absorbs that comfortably. Going is the other pillar. Four wins from five runs on good or adjacent ground, with all five placed — that's a +2.10 going score and it's the best going figure on today's entire shortlist. Good ground at Newton Abbot in August is right in the pocket. The market_move score is +2.00 — a strict steamer, majority of bookies shortened, none drifted. That's the highest signal reading the engine can return on that feature. At 5/4, the market implied probability is 39.7% against an engine estimate of 36.9%, so there is a negative edge of -17.1% — I won't pretend otherwise. The price is not generous. But the composite is 7.26/10, which I read as strong, the form is live, the going fits, and the money has moved the right way. Anthony Honeyball's 30-day strike rate is 1/7 (14%), which the engine marks as on par — nothing to shout about, nothing to worry about.
What worries me
The price is the clearest risk and I won't bury it: -17.1% edge means the market is a fraction ahead of the model, and at 5/4 there is minimal margin for error. The class rise (rank 3 today vs rank 4 last time out) is a genuine factor — this is a Class 2 chase and the engine flags it. Going is declared good today at Newton Abbot but any significant drying or softening between declaration and post time changes the picture, even though the horse's going profile is broad enough to cope with adjacent conditions. Trainer Honeyball's recent form — 1/7 in the last 30 days — is on the thin side of on par; it's not alarming but it's not a positive. The composite lead over El Morjan and My Girl Katie is marginal enough that if any of those data gaps filled in unfavourably, the order could shift. Engine conviction is set at MEDIUM for a reason.
