Speed plus steamers: the Galway edge points one way

Method

The market was loud this morning — multiple steamers across the card — and the read I keep coming back to is that when speed dominates and the money confirms it, you back it. That is today's story in one sentence. The engine scanned all 20 declared races and 199 runners, filtering first for odds between 2.0 and 50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), then for field size between 6 and 14 runners, and finally dropping six runners whose selections collide with the Lay of the Day model. Feature weights in play today: market_move carries the heaviest load at 1.6, speed at 1.5, form at 1.2, class_change and going both at 0.8 (a typo in the config shows 0.8 for going and 0.8 for trainer_strike — I'm reading both as such), with draw reserved for v2 and unavailable across the board.

Today's universe

We started with 199 runners. The odds band filter brought that to 183, the field-size gate (6–14 runners) cut it to 104, and the lay-of-day collision screen removed a further six, leaving 98 runners to score. Those 98 were ranked by composite across speed, form, class_change, trainer_strike, going, and market_move — weighted as above.

The shortlist

Five horses made it into genuine consideration. Iamimmaculate topped the board at 7.07/10 — meaningfully clear of Biscaysian at 6.68/10, Jp's Express at 6.62/10, Level Look at 6.41/10, and Daretobedifferent at 6.40/10. The gap between first and second is 0.39 points — not enormous, but real. What separated Iamimmaculate was the combination of the highest speed z-score in the pool and the full market_move credit, a pairing that the engine's weighting structure rewards more than any other. Biscaysian is the one I had a long look at — a 16/1 steamer with a serious model edge — but the blanks on form, going, and class_change leave too much of the picture dark at that price for a single.

Why this horse

The speed figure is the foundation. Iamimmaculate posts an SR of 87 against a field mean of 59.9 in the Galway 17:00, a z-score of +2.45 — the widest gap in today's surviving universe. At a weight of 1.5, that drives +1.04 into the composite before anything else fires. That alone would put this horse in the conversation. What closes the argument is the market_move signal: a strict majority of bookies shortened overnight, none drifted, earning the full +2.00 weighted credit — the maximum the market_move feature delivers. The model's estimated win probability sits at 35.9% against a market-implied 25.5%, an edge of +25.8%. At 5/2 decimal 3.5, that is a value position the engine is comfortable flagging as MEDIUM conviction. Form reads '012-4' — decay-weighted average of +0.61 on the latest win — which is solid rather than spectacular, and it nudges the composite further in the right direction. I note that Jp's Express, drawn in the same race at 11/4, also steamed and carries a composite of 6.62/10. The same market that shortened Iamimmaculate shortened Jp's Express too — so the race is genuinely contested and the model knows it. The separation comes down to the speed differential: SR 87 versus SR 71 is a gap I cannot ignore.

What worries me

Three things could derail this. First, trainer Gerard O'Leary is cold — 1/21 in the last 30 days, a 5% strike rate, scoring -0.60 on trainer_strike. A trainer running well below par is a drag on any selection and I am not going to paper over it. Second, the going record on good or adjacent ground reads 0-from-2 with zero placed, scoring -0.20 — thin evidence, but the evidence that exists is the wrong colour. Third, class_change is entirely unavailable because the race class is unrecognised; that feature contributes nothing to the composite in either direction, which means the score is built on fewer pillars than I would like. Jp's Express is the horse I respect most in the same race — it is a 6.62 composite steamer in the same event, and if the Galway market has read this race differently to the speed model, Jp's Express is the one doing the damage.
