Method
It is a Galway Saturday, the market is moving hard on a filly that has won five of her last six, and the read I keep coming back to is that this kind of form sequence does not happen by accident. Today I scanned 37 races and 402 runners declared, running each through a filter pipeline that cuts odds-on shots, removes fields smaller than six or larger than fourteen, and then weights seven features — speed, form, class change, trainer strike rate, going, market move, and draw — with market move carrying the heaviest single weight at 1.6 and speed second at 1.5. The odds band kept only runners priced between 2.0 and 50.0 decimal, the field-size gate did the rest.
Today's universe
The pipeline opened on 402 runners. The odds filter cut to 332 — removing the odds-on favourites and the 50/1 outsiders alike. The field-size gate, which strips out races with fewer than six or more than fourteen runners, brought that down to 173 runners across the qualifying races. Those 173 are what the composite scores were built on today.
The shortlist
Five names made it to the top of the sheet. Meriden led on 7.44/10, pushed hardest by form, a clean market move, and a speed figure that stands well clear of her field's mean. Midnight Jet came in second at 7.24/10 — a steamer in the Galway novice hurdle, but the going feature returned unavailable (no career runs on good or adjacent ground), which left a meaningful gap in the case. Tilani scored 6.98/10 and carries an edge figure that looks extraordinary on paper (+130.8%), though Class 6 at Wolverhampton on the all-weather and a form string of '861128' invite some scepticism. Ciarrai Abu at 6.86/10 is rising in class today, which cost her on the class-change feature. Celtic Motif rounds out at 6.73/10 — Joseph O'Brien's hot trainer strike rate (23%) is a plus, but the speed figure is almost exactly field mean (z = +0.04), and at 11/1 the market implied probability sits at just 7.4%. What tipped the balance for Meriden was the combination of the strongest composite on the sheet, a clear steamer read, and a form line that is simply the best here.
Why this horse
The form string for Meriden reads '611111' — five consecutive wins, the most recent carrying a decay-weighted form score of +2.00, which is the highest raw form contribution on today's sheet. That feeds into a form weighted score of +0.87 at weight 1.2. She is not just winning; she is winning in a pattern the model rates as durable. The speed figure backs it: an SR of 118 against a field mean of 87.2 gives a z-score of +1.57, worth +0.57 to the composite after weighting. In a seven-furlong Listed fillies' stakes, that kind of superiority on the speed measure is not noise — it is a genuine class advantage expressed in raw figures. The going feature adds more: 3-from-3 on good or adjacent ground, which at +1.50 is as clean a going record as you will find on today's shortlist. The engine's estimated win probability is 37.7% against a market implied 29.8%, an edge of +13.1% — meaningful, not enormous, but it points the same direction as everything else.
What worries me
The primary risk is the market. At 2/1 (decimal 3.0), Meriden is not a price that forgives much — you need her to turn up. The trainer, Denis Gerard Hogan, is running at 9% over the last 30 days, which is on par but not hot, and that dragged the trainer-strike feature to -0.29. The class-change feature contributed nothing (+0.00) — she is running at the same class as last time out (Listed, Class 1), so there is no drop-in-class tailwind. The draw feature is entirely unavailable across all of today's runners — that data layer is not yet built — so if draw bias exists over the Galway seven-furlong course today, it is blind to the model. Celtic Motif is in the same race and is also a steamer, trained by a hot handler; she is the in-race threat to respect even if her composite sits 0.71 points back.
