Method
Saturday's market is telling a story, and the loudest voice on the board belongs to a chaser at Uttoxeter — that is the read I keep coming back to. Today's scan covered all declared runners, weighting market movement at 1.6 — the heaviest factor in the model — followed by speed at 1.5 and form at 1.2, with class change, trainer strike rate, going, and draw completing the picture at lower weights. The odds band ran from 2.0 to 50.0 decimal, cutting out odds-on runners and anything north of 49/1. Field size was capped at 6 to 14 declared runners, filtering out the chaos of big-field cavalry charges and the noise of tiny fields.
Today's universe
The day opened with 15 races and 147 runners. The race-state pass dropped none — all races were live. The odds band removed 43 runners, taking the pool to 104. The field-size cut trimmed a further 5, leaving 99 runners across the valid races. That is the universe from which the shortlist was built.
The shortlist
Six horses survived into serious consideration. Grand Clermont topped the board at 6.61/10, with Percy's Daydream a single hundredth behind at 6.60/10 — genuinely marginal. October Hill came third at 6.58/10, Drombeg Lad fourth at 6.56/10, Sunray Shadow fifth at 6.51/10, and Northern Rose sixth at 6.50/10. What separated the top two was not speed — Percy's Daydream actually holds the stronger speed score — but form and class context. Grand Clermont carries a form figure of +0.51 against Percy's Daydream's +0.56, which is near-identical, but the decisive lever was trainer: David Pipe at 19% over 30 days is hot, while David O'Meara at 6% is cold. One point of composite separates a chaser in a steaming Class 2 from a flat handicapper with a cold yard behind it.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to on Grand Clermont is the market move. The model's heaviest-weighted feature — market movement at 1.6 — scores +2.00 for this horse, the maximum signal: a strict majority of bookmakers shortened, none drifted. At 4/1 the model's estimated win probability sits at 33.7% against a market-implied 17.9%, a raw edge of +68.6%. That is not a marginal lean — that is the market and the model pointing in the same direction with some force. I had a long look at whether that was a fluke of thin liquidity in a jumping race in July, but Pipe's yard being hot at 19% over 27 runners in the last 30 days is a real supporting detail, not noise.
On the form side, Grand Clermont's string reads '-61241' — the recent winner carries a decay-weighted form average of +1.17, which is a solid signal that the latest run was not a one-off. The speed rating of SR 127 against a field mean of 121.0 puts him at z = +0.73, a positive but not dominant edge on pure sectionals. Class is the one friction point: he is rising in class today, rank 3 versus last-time-out rank 4, which the model penalises at -0.60. That drag is real and I am not dismissing it. But when the money comes in this cleanly in a race where his form is the sharpest in the field, I back the market as corroborating evidence rather than noise.
The composite of 6.61/10 is solid by the model's own scale — not the 8+ territory that makes you reach for the phone immediately, but comfortably above marginal. On a Saturday card where nothing screams, this is the clearest case on the board.
What worries me
The class rise is the most honest concern here — stepping up from rank 4 to rank 3 in a Class 2 handicap chase over three miles is not trivial, and the -0.60 class penalty the model applies is earned. Going is logged as good at Uttoxeter, and Grand Clermont is 1-from-3 on good or adjacent going with two places, which is fine but not dominant. Sunray Shadow runs in the same race and is the one that keeps me honest: SR 133 versus Grand Clermont's 127, a form string of '-11131' with a decay-weighted average of +1.62, a trainer in Dan Skelton running at 23% over 30 days, and 4-from-8 on this going. Sunray Shadow scored 6.51/10 and the only reason it finishes behind today's selection is that its market movement is dead flat — +0.00 — while Grand Clermont is the horse the money found. If Sunray Shadow had been steamered instead, it would be the tip. Draw data remains unavailable across the board, reserved for a future build.
