Method
The sharpest signal today is not coming from the form book alone — the money has moved hard and the speed figure agrees. The engine scanned all 55 races declared on 24 July 2026, covering 609 runners at the starting gun. Three filters then carved the field down to a workable universe: an odds band of 2.0–50.0 decimal (no odds-on, nothing beyond 49/1), a field-size corridor of 6–14 declared runners, and a feature-weighting stack that places the heaviest load on market movement (1.6) and raw speed (1.5), with form (1.2) close behind, and class change, trainer strike rate, going, and draw carrying progressively lighter influence.
Today's universe
The race-state filter made no cuts — all 609 runners were live. The odds-band filter trimmed that to 521, removing the odds-on favourites and the rag-end longshots. The field-size filter was the blunt instrument: races with fewer than 6 or more than 14 declared runners were dropped, leaving 329 runners across a tighter set of competitive, scoreable contests. That's the pool the composite scores were built from.
The shortlist
Five horses cleared 7.0/10 on the composite, plus one just below. Mr Writer led on 7.28/10, with Ash Tree breathing right on his shoulder at 7.27/10 — a gap of just 0.01 separating first from second. Dream's Ka sat third at 7.19/10, La Moon fourth at 7.11/10, and Gymbaazy fifth at 7.06/10. Mr Writer edged Ash Tree on speed — a z-score of +2.26 against a field mean versus +1.23 for the filly — and that speed weight of 1.5 in the stack is what ultimately separates two horses that were level on market movement. Dream's Ka has the hot Skelton yard behind it and a tidy form string, but the going record (1-from-7 on good or adjacent) is soft enough to keep it honest at third.
Why this horse
The read I keep coming back to on Mr Writer is the combination of a steam move and a speed figure that towers over the field. The market_move score is +2.00 — a strict steamer, majority of bookies shortened, none drifted — and that carries the heaviest weight in the engine at 1.6. When the market and the model agree, that's where I pay attention. The speed score is +2.26 on a z-scale, built on an SR of 96 against a field mean of 67.8 — that's not a marginal edge, that's a meaningful one, and it pulls the full 1.5 weight behind it. The form string '–42151' is solid without being flashy: the decay-weighted average of +1.21 from that latest win is doing real work, and the going record of 2-from-5 with three placed runs on good to firm gives me confidence the ground is not an obstacle today at Ascot.
The engine's market read puts the estimated win probability at 36.9% against a market-implied 27.5%, a positive edge of +20.1%. At 9/4 decimal 3.25, that's a price I can get behind without squinting. The trainer picture is neutral — James Fanshawe at 11% over the last 30 days is neither hot nor cold, a slight drag of -0.09 — but with a speed and market double of this weight, a flat trainer score is not enough to move me off. Class is unchanged: today's rank 5 mirrors the last-time-out rank 5, so there is no class-rise headwind to account for.
The composite of 7.28/10 sits in the solid-to-strong band. It is not a runaway leader — the 0.01 gap over Ash Tree is the slimmest I would want to work with — but the features driving that score are the right ones: the two highest-weighted inputs, speed and market, are both firing hard in Mr Writer's favour.
What worries me
The honest risk here is how thin the margin over Ash Tree is — 7.28 versus 7.27 is a coin-flip at the composite level, and the filly's form string of '1' with a +3.00 form score is cleaner than anything Mr Writer carries. If the Chapple-Hyam yard knows something the model doesn't about Ash Tree's readiness, the edge narrows further. The draw feature is unavailable across the whole shortlist — draw-bias data is reserved for v2 of the engine — and at Ascot over 7f, the draw is not irrelevant; that's a genuine blind spot. Going is declared good to firm and the record on that surface is adequate, but it is not dominant. A single tick softer and the going score weakens. Finally, the field-size window catches 6–14 runners, so this is not a two-horse race — there is enough noise in the handicap field at 16:40 to undo a marginal leader.
